Tom Godfrey - Acoustic-Electric Guitar
Book a Private WorkshopI have been a little of everything in the world of music: jazz guitarist, singer, trombonist, band director, church music director, and music typesetter. A common thread throughout my career has been a passion for teaching, which is what led me to write the Godfrey Guitar System – a series of guitar books that teaches music reading and guitar skills that are fundamental for any musical style. Originally a trombonist, I played with the Ohio Light Opera and for acts that included George Burns, Rosemary Clooney, and the Manhattan Transfer. While playing trombone in an Air Force band, my trombone career was cut short by a lip injury. After realizing that trombone was no longer an option, I picked up the guitar and began playing professionally again after three years of intense practice. Most of my professional guitar playing experience was in Atlanta, where I performed big band music with the Sentimental Journey Orchestra, played musicals with Act3 Productions, and sang and played jazz standards for countless gigs. I enjoyed a busy performance schedule and full roster of students in Atlanta, but I despised the traffic. I moved to Albuquerque in 2018, trading gridlock for a gorgeous landscape. Here in Albuquerque, I continue to teach private lessons, and I run an after-school music program in a small private school. I am thrilled to be part of Sessions Academy, where I have the opportunity to help guitarists throughout the country!
